Grow Your Own

by Patrick on July 14, 2009

For the past 20 years or so, I’ve been steadily trying to improve the quality of the food I include in my diet.

Over the years I’ve found some great local farmers that produce excellent meats and vegetables, but of course, these come at a cost (a price I gladly pay to know that I’m consuming foods that are untainted with fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides or undergone God-knows-what kind of genetic manipulation) which has also been the stimulus to grow many of my own veggies.

However, I’ve yet to raise livestock and recently I’ve been thinking about keeping chickens for the fresh eggs (and when they get too old, soup) to reduce expenses.

Though I reside within the city limits, I just learned that it’s legal to own up to three hens (no roosters) in the town where I live.

I really want to start soon to take advantage of the laying cycle, but I don’t want to build a permanent coop because I plan to move to a larger lot soon. What to do?

All the products are made from recycled materials and are easy to clean. You can order it complete with an instruction book, feed and the company even ships the chickens any where in the US.

I think I’ll go for the smaller model, but they also make one that is a self-contained coop on wheels that comes with portable fencing. Fantastic for moving the little birds around, so they get to eat bugs and seeds and dig in the dirt in different areas of your yard.

If you live in the city, but would like to have the benefit of farm-fresh eggs, check these out!
