Good Posture and Youth: Conflicting Elements?

by Patrick on November 7, 2009

This is a guest post from twenty-something about her realization that posture, health and avoiding chronic pain, is not just the domain of the old.

time to straighten up

My husband frequently scolds me for locking my knees and occasionally standing pigeon toed. I don’t even notice when I’m doing it, and I’m sure it’s been happening for a long time.

A friend at work is constantly telling me that I have terrible posture and will have all sorts of neck and back problems some day if I continue to slouch and slump. Today when he walked in the room I was all but curled up in a ball in my chair with my neck kinked to the left looking at my computer screen. I got the look and quickly straightened up.

Pardon the pun, but when did everyone decide to get on my back?

Not wanting to jeopardize my future lumbar limberness, I vow to have good posture this week (I want to keep the goal attainable) and see how I feel as a result. If nothing else, I will be on the way to creating a good habit of carrying myself in a respectable manner while simultaneously reducing the chances of neck and back issues down the road. It’s small step, but hey, it’s a step.

Come to think of it, my lower back is a little sore this morning…
